In the classic film Dr. Strangelove, the fictional Gen. Jack D. Ripper complained that communists were trying to destroy our precious bodily fluids through the fluoridation of our water supply.
In light of recent developments in the ongoing controversy over fluoridation, it appears that Gen. Ripper might not have been as crazy as he sounded.
Dr. Hardy Limeback, head of the Department of Preventive Dentistry for the University of Toronto and president of the Canadian Association for Dental Research, for years was Canada's leading advocate for the use of fluoride to prevent tooth decay.
Today, he has defected to the side of the critics claiming, "Children under three should never use fluoridated toothpaste or drink fluoridated water." He added that baby formula should never be made using fluoridated city water.
Why the change of heart?
According to an interview with Barry Forbes of the Mesa, AZ, Tribune, Dr. Limeback said over the past several years he came to understand that the evidence in favor of fluoride is questionable at best, while the evidence for harm continues to grow.
" . . .[T]he crowning blow was the realization that we have been dumping contaminated fluoride into water reservoirs for half a century. The vast majority of all fluoride additives come from Tampa Bay, Florida, smokestack scrubbers. The additives are a toxic byproduct of the super-phosphate fertilizer industry.
"Tragically, that means we're not just dumping toxic fluoride into our drinking water. We're also exposing innocent, unsuspecting people to deadly elements of lead, arsenic, and radium, all of them carcinogenic. Because of the cumulative properties of toxins, the detrimental effects on human health are catastrophic."
His view on the toxicity of fluoride was confirmed by Regina Miskewitz, director of research and development for oral and personal care [products] for Church & Dwight Co., makers of Arm & Hammer fluoridated toothpaste. "(W)hen I receive the fluoride here, it has a skull and crossbones on it," she said. According to the Clinical Toxicology of Commercial Products handbook, fluoride is more poisonous than lead and only slightly less poisonous than arsenic. Dr. Dean Burke, former chief chemist of the National Cancer Institute, has stated that more than 10,000 fluoridation-linked cancer deaths occur in the United States annually.
The controversy over the use of fluoride has been on going since the end of World War II when various U.S. Government agencies, along with the American Dental Association, began urging the fluoridation of municipal drinking water as a defense against tooth decay.
Early opponents were publicly portrayed as Cold War kooks like Gen. Ripper who believed fluoridation was some sort of communist plot. No one at the time thought it might be a plot by greedy and callous corporate leaders.
But evidence is building that the fluoridation of drinking water may have been a soulless attempt by some corporations to dispose of a dangerous waste product banned from ocean dumping by international accords.
Authors Joel Griffiths and Chris Bryson discovered hundreds of previously classified government documents showing that fluoride was a key chemical in the manufacture of atomic bombs. It also was the nuclear industry's leading poisonous waste.
They found that much of the original research showing low doses of fluoride was safe for humans was done by A-bomb scientists who had been ordered to provide "evidence useful in litigation" being filed against defense contractors for damage caused by fluoride. The first lawsuits over the atomic energy program more concerned fluoride than radiation. Evidence which showed adverse health effects from fluoride was suppressed in the interest of national security by the Atomic Energy Commission, probably the most powerful of the Cold War agencies and the one most mentioned in connection with the crash retrievals in New Mexico in 1947.
As a result of this Cold War secrecy and deception, many leading dentists and scientists were convinced of the safety of small doses of fluoride. According to Dr. John Yiamouyiannis, a biochemist and president of the Safe Water Foundation, "Over 120 million Americans are being chronically poisoned by fluoridation . . . In addition, fluoridation is responsible for 40 million cases of arthritis, dental deformity in eight million children, allergic reactions in two million people, and overall 10,000 unnecessary cancer deaths every year."
The cover up of the hazards from fluoride continued right up to today. In 1998, data from the National Academy of Sciences, the World Heath Organization, and the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services proved that current fluoride intake from all sources is above the level known to cause health problems such as arthritis and osteoporosis. But this information was never passed along to the general public. Instead, articles on the subject ended up on Project Censored top 25 censored news stories.
Countering claims by the Centers for Disease Control that fluoride is safe, Dr. Limeback said the CDC and dentists are relying on 50-year-old data, which was prepared by atomic scientists seeking to dispel health concerns and are questionable at best.
"On the other hand," he added, "the evidence against systemic fluoride intake continues to pour in.
"I have absolutely no training in toxicity. Your well-intentioned dentist is simply following 50 years of misinformation from public health and the dental association. Me too. Unfortunately, we were wrong. The truth was a bitter pill to swallow. But swallow it I did."
When asked if lawsuits might be filed once the harmful nature of fluoride becomes generally known, Dr. Limeback replied succinctly, "Remember tobacco?"
So this toxic waste product of the aluminum, fertilizer, and nuclear industry, which was banned from being dumped into the world's oceans, instead was put into our drinking water. And, like tobacco, experts from both the government and corporate labs told us it was safe and effective against tooth decay.
It's a classic case of what you don't know, CAN hurt you. And don't wait on the corporate masters of the New World Order to inform consumers of potential health hazards. Today, corporate profits and trade take precedence over public health concerns.
